As part of the International Red Cross/Crescent movement 2030 strategic plan, of reducing diarrhea and increase community resilience to disasters and public health emergencies, the department also focuses on providing improved water and sanitation coverage through Community Based Health and First Aid (CBHFA), Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) approaches, and construction of model latrines.
Every day in rural communities and poor urban centers throughout sub-Saharan Africa, hundreds of millions of people suffer from a lack of access to clean, safe water. Women and girls especially bear the burden of walking miles at a time to gather water from streams and ponds, full of water-borne disease that is making them and their families sick.
