Funded by the Netherlands Red Cross, this intervention targets children under five years, pregnant, and lactating women groups most at risk due to the El Niño-induced drought that severely disrupted the 2023/2024 farming season.

Speaking on behalf of the Gwembe District Commissioner, Mr. Febian Habeenzu highlighted the critical need for such support: “This handover comes at a crucial time when many families are struggling with food shortages caused by the drought. We thank Zambia Red Cross Society and its partners for their continued commitment to our community’s health and wellbeing.”

ZRCS Director Programmes, Dr. Jack Bbabbi, emphasized the importance of this nutritional handover. “This support will significantly improve the nutritional status of the most vulnerable and help mitigate the effects of the drought,” he said.
ZRCS Provincial Executive Committee for Social Welfare member, Dr. Mary Miyomba, described the initiative as “a timely intervention that will save lives and build community resilience.”
The Gwembe handover follows a similar one to Sinazongwe District earlier this year and reflects ZRCS’s continued commitment to transparency, partnership, and sustainability in disaster response across the country.
