ZAMBIA RED CROSS SOCIETY LAUNCHES CRISIS PROJECT IN SIAVONGA AND GWEMBE DISTRICT

26th APRIL 2025– Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS) has launched the Acute Crisis Project in Gwembe and Siavonga Districts of Southern Province, aimed at addressing urgent food needs in drought-affected communities following the 2024/2025 drought, which impacted most parts of the country.
The Acute Crisis Project focuses on three key pillars: firstly, Food Security and Nutrition, secondly, Resilient Livelihoods and Basic Needs, and lastly Improved Watershed Management and Disaster Risk Reduction.

Under the Food Security and Nutrition pillar, ZRCS is assisting 5,000 households (2,500 in Gwembe and 2,500 in Siavonga) with cash assistance. Each household has received K600 per month for three months, totaling K9 million.

For Resilient Livelihoods and Basic Needs, ZRCS supported 1,000 farmers (500 in Siavonga and 500 in Gwembe) with farming inputs at the beginning of the year. Each beneficiary received: 5kg of sorghum, 250g of okra seeds, 5kg of cowpeas, 50kg of urea fertilizer, and 50kg of D-Compound fertilizer.

Additionally, ZRCS trained 1,000 lead farmers in both districts in climate-smart agriculture techniques. These farmers will share their knowledge to help others adapt to climate change impacts.

As part of its efforts to improve Watershed Management and Disaster Risk Reduction, ZRCS will rehabilitate 20 water points in both districts to enhance access to safe and clean water for communities severely affected by drought.

Speaking at the launch, Mrs. Debora Bwalya, ZRCS Social Welfare Board Chairperson, urged the people of Siavonga and Gwembe to use the assistance wisely to sustain their families during this challenging time.

Gwembe District Commissioner Mr. Killion Chikandula, represented by District Administration Officer Mr. Fabiah Habeenzu, praised ZRCS, stating that the support came at a critical time. “We appreciate ZRCS and its partners for stepping in to assist our most vulnerable families,” he said.

Siavonga District Commissioner Mr. Geoffrey Jankopo pledged government support to ensure the success and sustainability of the initiative. He emphasized the need for a fair, inclusive, and transparent process to ensure assistance reaches those most in need.

The Acute Crisis Project is being implemented with support from Netherlands Red Cross.
