ZRCS COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION

Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS) today, 13th October 2026, joined government and cooperating partners in commemorating the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) under the theme "Resilience Starts at Home.” The event highlighted the importance of collective action in reducing disaster risks and strengthening community resilience.

The commemoration was graced by Republican Vice President Dr. W. K. Mutale Nalumango, who emphasized the need to place households and communities at the center of organizations of disaster risk reduction. She called on all Zambians to make preparedness part of their everyday lives by taking early warnings seriously and acting on them.

Delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of all stakeholders, ZRCS Secretary General Mr. Cosmas Sakala commended the government, through the Disaster Risk Management Division, for its leadership and coordination in disaster risk management.

Mr. Sakala acknowledged the contributions of ZRCS and other humanitarian organizations in supporting vulnerable communities before, during, and after disasters. He reaffirmed ZRCS’ commitment to working with the government to translate the theme into practical action that strengthens household preparedness and community resilience.

ZRCS showcased to the Vice President its support to the government in fulfilling its auxiliary role to the public authorities in the humanitarian field. The National Society highlighted its work in disaster risk reduction, disaster response, health and care, first aid, and other humanitarian interventions aimed at saving lives, alleviating suffering, and strengthening community resilience. These efforts demonstrate ZRCS’ commitment to complementing government initiatives and supporting vulnerable communities before, during, and after emergencies.

ZRCS also participated in the clean-up exercise as part of the activities marking the commemoration, reinforcing the importance of collective action in keeping communities clean, reducing health risks, and building resilience.
